The Winds page

At a glance

Upper-air wind profiles across the UK, derived from ADS-B aircraft measurements — higher resolution than radiosondes and updated continuously.

Deep dive

winds uses the Wind Atlas — a dense-mesh interpolation of winds recovered from commercial aircraft position reports (ADS-B). Aircraft climb and descent profiles sample the lower troposphere at airports; en-route cruise gives the 250–350 hPa layer.

You see:

  • Hodographs at any clicked point.
  • 0–6 km bulk shear field.
  • 0–1 km / 0–3 km SRH contours (storm motion estimated from Bunkers method).
  • Jet core identification.

Latency is typically 15 minutes end-to-end. Radiosonde launches (12Z/00Z) remain the verification truth.
