Target selection

At a glance

Picking a spot to be by mid-afternoon so storms fire where you are, not over someone else. It's forecasting reduced to coordinates.

Deep dive

A good target sits at the intersection of:

  • Sufficient surface-based CAPE (convergence of theta-e axis).
  • Stronger mid-level dry air / steep lapse rates.
  • A triggering mechanism within 2–3 hours of intended arrival (front, outflow, sea breeze, terrain).
  • Deep-layer shear aligned to favour the storm mode you want.
  • A road network that lets you reposition in multiple directions.

UK-specific caveats: narrow geography limits road options, and sea breezes + coastal convergence lines can trump any large-scale analysis. Chaseit's targets page offers model-driven suggestions but the final call is a human judgement — mesoanalysis at midday is where the real targeting happens.
